Artist Statement: "Canada’s Firsts"

Canada’s Firsts is a series that aims to show the industrial history in Canada, through blurred water colors of events like the first railway, the first flight, the first gas station, and the first steam car. By employing a blurred photo approach with watercolor, I aim to capture the transient, almost elusive nature of these historical events. The watercolor medium, with its fluid and unpredictable nature, reflects how history can often feel fragmented or fading, even when it is
foundational. The blurred technique evokes the sense that these firsts, while monumental, are slowly becoming distant memories, gradually fading in the collective consciousness, just as time has blurred the edges of these events. In Canada’s Firsts, I hope to offer a visual exploration of these key events, shedding light on how Canada’s industrial history shaped its identity, while also acknowledging the way time and memory shape our understanding of the past.
